Celebrations

Congratulations to all who are celebrating some special days in their lives.

Eapen John celebrated his 75th birthday on Sunday August 1. Happy Birthday, Eapen!

June is known as the month for weddings, but it seems August is also popular as three Mount Zion couples are celebrating significant anniversaries.

Richard and Ann Crossman are celebrating their 60th anniversary on August 12

Ed and Mary Baumgart, are celebrating their 61st anniversary, August 20th and their 61st year at Mount Zion!

Ed and Ladona Reigert are  celebrating their 65th anniversary
on Aug 24th.

Jacquelyn Schweitzer is celebrating her 60th birthday

on Saturday, September 11th, 2021. Sister Joan writes

that she is well and continues working her shifts at Food Basics.

It was during Synod Assembly in June that Mrs. Bell was named the receipient of the Eastern Synod Leadership award for Exemplary Service to the Wider Community. However, it was not until just two weeks ago, that she received the actual award presented to her from Pastor Philip. Congratulations Mrs. Bell!

Holidays

The Mount Zion News will be taking a break for the last weeks of August. The next newsletter will be September 3.

Pastor Philip will be on vacation the week of August 30 when his daughter Cheryl and soon to be son- in law will be visiting.

Financial Report

Member support continues to be very good and disbursements are lower than planned resulting in a positive report for July. However the results have been buoyed by Government Support & other one- time benefits. In the second half, Government support is expected to decline, and rental income will not be at planned levels.  A recent forecast suggests that we will likely end the year better than budget but a significant deficit is still likely. Our next scheduled Zoom Service will be on August 22.

An Update from Choral Scholar, Kristina Twilt

Last week I finished my seven month music therapy internship at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto.  I had the privilege of providing music therapy to many kids aged 8 months to 18 years old, who came to the hospital as they were recovering from various illnesses, injuries and surgeries.  My clients, supervisors, and colleagues have all taught me so much and helped me grow in many different areas, and I am grateful for it all: my musicianship, clinical skills, professionalism, and ability to connect with others through music and beyond words has grown tremendously.  I look forward to bringing the sense of play I got to experience with my past clients to my future work, connecting with the inner child that I believe is inherent in all of us, and helping others take their next steps towards their emotional and mental health goals.

We are looking for a Zoom Host

Thank you to Dennis Eaton for acting as Sunday morning Zoom host for the last year and trust and he and Hope are enjoying life on the East Coast for the summer.

Dennis’ departure means we are now looking for a person or persons who can act as Zoom hosts for our pre and post service gatherings. The gatherings offer the opportunity for members to interact with each other for a little Narthex talk. The job is not onerous and will take about 30 minutes in total. The host opens the Zoom meeting at 9:40 am and admits people to the meeting. Following the service the hosts reopens the meeting to those who wish to participate.

The Zoom host is a volunteer opportunity to someone who is not currently committed to volunteer activities on Sunday morning. If you like to visit with your friends and are familiar with Zoom, this important volunteer position may be for you!

In Our Prayers

Let us continue to remember in our prayers Marjorie, Barb, George, Betty, Delfina, Jake, Julian, Rosalie, Kristen, James Sarah, Aaron Behm and Willie for healing and wholeness. For wisdom to discern our needs and that of the world in a new COVID free context so we could meaningfully serve each other and those around.

Fall Book Discussion, Thursday, October 28, 1:30-3:00 pm

Health Council will be holding a book discussion on The Boat People by Canadian author, Sharon Bala. Inspired by a real incident, the book is about five hundred refugees from Sri Lanka’s bloody civil war, who survive a perilous ocean voyage to Vancouver, BC, only to face, in their new land, the threat of deportation and accusations of terrorism. The book is a timely novel in that it may help us reflect on current refugee issues. The place and format of the discussion will be decided as we get closer to the date. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Slethaug or Betty Behm.

We had announced the possibility of purchasing Orange Shirts through the Woodland Cultural Centre but they are not taking any orders as they are not able to get further supplies from their source. If any of you have already paid for them, please contact the church office.
