Music is an integral part of the life of Mount Zion Lutheran Church. We are looking for a Director of Music to lead our music ministry through a wide variety of organ, piano and choral music. We value diverse musical styles which encompass traditional, contemporary, global, spirituals, gospel, hymnody and liturgical settings.

We will look to the Music Director to coordinate instrumentalists, percussionists and smaller musical groups such as a guitar choir and brass quintet and have an active role in Worship Planning in a dynamic work environment. An office and some secretarial support is provided.

 

Our instruments include a Guilbault-Thérien two manual pipe organ https://www.mzlc.ca/our-organ and a Yamaha C3 grand piano as well as a drum kit, Djembes and Congas. We have an adult SATB choir of 15-20 members and an active choral scholar program involving University vocal music students.

 

 Core Responsibilities:

 

  • participate in the selection of  hymns and communion music setting in conversation with the pastor.

  • recruit and train choir members, nurturing their development through worship, choir events, solo and small group singing.

  • research and choose choral music to support and enhance the lectionary/seasonal theme.

  • select and prepare organ/piano music for worship.

  • oversee the tuning and good repair of the organ and pianos.

  • Support, supervise integrate our University choral scholars.

  • be available to play for funerals/ memorial services and weddings.

  • recruit and supervise outside musicians for festival services and special occasions.

  • encourage opportunities to actively include youth and young adults in worship.

  • hold some regular office hours to facilitate planning and staff team interactions and communication. 

 

Education /Training and Skills

 

  • You have a Bachelor of Music Degree or equivalent training and experience as a strong organist, pianist, and choral conductor.

  • You are skilled and experienced in leading and accompanying choirs using seasoned coaching and training skills

  • You are knowledgeable and experienced in planning and leading church liturgy and music and comfortable in a range of musical styles including classical choral music, gospel, folk and world music, and more contemporary styles

  • You will also be comfortable collaborating with our staff team and communicating effectively with persons of all ages and on-line

 

Terms of Employment:

 

This is a permanent part time position with an average workload of 20 hours per week. The salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications according the RCCO scale. It comes with an eligibility for benefits and a vacation entitlement of four weeks. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2020 and a police check is required.
