All Saints Remembrance   Sunday November 6

People around the world celebrate All Saints Day in a number of different ways. Some light candles, some lay flowers and others cook feasts for the departed souls. At Mount Zion we will be remembering those who departed last year with the lighting of candles. You are also encouraged to light a candle in remembrance of your own cherished loved ones. Mount Zion will be remembering these members who passed this year.

Music and Choir Notes

We were so pleased to have trumpeter Debra Lacoste with us for an observance of Reformation Sunday.

Now we are looking forward to the 13th of November, when the handbell choir from St. Matthew's will be joining us here at Mount Zion.

This coming Sunday the choir will sing Vaughn Williams' stirring "O How Amiable Are Thy Dwellings" as part of our All Saints service. Don't forget to set your clocks back!

On the first Sunday in Advent, our choir will be part of an Advent Lessons and Carol service at St. Matthew's at 7:00 pm. Members of Mount Zion are encouraged to attend this special service to mark the beginning of the Advent season.

The choir is preparing some lovely Christmas music - something to look forward to!

October Financial Results

Results for the month of October increased our accumulated deficit by $5,029 to reach $43,054 through the ten- month period ending October 31 in our Ministry & Mission (current) account.

Although a significant deficit was recorded, this compares to a budgeted deficit of $74,241 for the period.  Improved receipts and reduced expenditures were responsible for this improvement as noted below:

Member support of $161,458 is $18,938 better than plan.  Thank you!

Mohawk Institute Virtual Tour  November 8

The Mohawk Institute  Residential School in Brantford, Ontario, adjacent to Six Nations of the Grand River, operated from 1828 to 1970. The building that housed it for many years is being restored as a museum, to preserve the record of its dark history.   A generous donation has made it possible for the Synod’s Circle for Reconciliation and Justice to offer a group online tour.

The guided tour  begins with a video created by local production company Thru the RedDoor, showing the rooms of the school and featuring interviews with five Survivors.  This will be followed by a debriefing led by someone from the Woodland Cultural Centre, and  our own time for reflection.
Date:  Tuesday November 8              Time: 7:00 to 9:00 pm EST
If you would like to attend, please register as soon as you can,  as spaces are limited.  You may register at https://form.jotform.com/222764120726250  here. For more information, please visit the Eastern Synod website.Mary Thompson

Handbell music to ring in the season at Trillium Lutheran  December 4

The Christmas and pre-Christmas seasons have long been accompanied by the mellow peal of bells, a sound sorely missed in many community spaces over the past two years when Covid-19 made singing and playing together difficult.
But as we slowly and carefully transition back into live music, bell choirs are making a welcome return. Unlike brass and wind instruments, massed bells can fill large spaces with rich sound, minus the risk of dispersing viral moisture into the air.
Early in December, Trillium Lutheran Church in Waterloo, along with guest musicians from several other local Lutheran churches, will present a special Advent Lessons and Carols afternoon built around the mellow resonance of handbell harmony.
While based on the Christian tradition of interspersing seasonal Bible readings with special music and hymns, the service will be non-denominational; Trillium welcomes people of all ages, backgrounds and faiths to this free event.
What: Hand Bell Advent Lessons and Carols Service
When: December 4, 2022 at 3:30 pm
Where: Trillium Lutheran Church, 22 Willow Street Waterloo
